How To: Installing WordPress

Now that you have a good understanding of what a blog is and have purchased a cheap domain and hosting plan, we will proceed to install your blogging platform - WordPress.

WordPress is a state-of-the-art publishing platform with a focus on aesthetics, web standards, and usability. WordPress is both free and priceless at the same time.

For this, you will need to have some information from your host. Here are the steps:

  1. Create a MySQL database
  2. Retrieve FTP info
  3. Upload WordPress
  4. Go through installation Process
Create a MySQL Database
It may look intimidating, but it really is pretty simple. In your 1and1 admin panel, navigate to the database manager and then click create new MySQL database. Choose a name and user/pass. Remember to note down all of this information.
Retrieve FTP Info + Download Client
Then, in your control panel, visit the FTP section and note down the user/pass you will use when connecting to your site via FTP. Now, download an FTP client. For windows users I recommend FileZilla, and for Mac users I recommend Cyberduck.
Login to Your Site via FTP
Open up your FTP client and then hit connect to server. Type in your domain name, and then log in using the FTP user and pass. Once successfully logged in, look for a folder called Public_HTML or something along those lines. If you can’t find it, ask your host what the webroot of your site is.
Download and Upload Wordpress
Now, if you haven’t already downloaded WordPress from the wordpress site, please do so now. Drag it into the webroot folder of your site using your FTP client. Once all of the WordPress files have been uploaded, navigate to your domain in your browser.
Follow WP Install Intructions
WordPress will now take you through the installation process. Remember the database information you noted down? You will need this.
And now you are done, with a fresh installation of WordPress.

  1. The thing I love about my host is that it has fantastico, which means I can install wordpress on my domains in about 3 clicks. Which is pretty awesome.

  2. Personally, I prefer that the host has a one click install option for Wordpress. I made this a requirement when I set out looking for one. Eventually I settled with Mediatemple, as they seem to be the preferred choice for the pros, but plenty of other hosts offer one click Wordpress installs, which are much less daunting.
